Four Days For The Fourth - Scavenger Hunt

Win a $50 gift card for solving the puzzle in the Scavenger Hunt! The Hunt starts Wednesday July 3. Pick up an instruction sheet at the Durango Welcome Center, then solve the clue to the first location. Go there to get your letter/number/symbol, and your clue to the next location. Once you have found all 13 locations, rearrange the letters/numbers/symbols to form a phrase. Submit your completed instruction sheet by 5 pm on Saturday July 6. You, too, can be an artist! Saunter over to Hermosa Café and pick up a paintbrush to participate in the community mural. Each year Hermosa Café provides a huge canvas, paints and some outlines to create a Patriotic Mural. Fun for adults - and also great for kids while adults are having tea and coffee! It is interesting to watch the picture emerge over the four days.   Part of the 4th of July Celebration!

VFW Post 4031 is hosting a Independence Day holiday Ice Social! This Ice social is being held in conjunction with the Southwest Civic Winds Concert in Rotary Park. Ice Cream, of course, along with Hot Dogs, Chips and sodas will be served.   Part of the 4th of July Celebration!
Jazz up the 4th with the Civic Winds Jazz Orchestra
6:30pm / Rotary Park
The Civic Winds Jazz Orchestra will perform live at a FREE special evening concert. The concert will be held at the gazebo in Rotary Park. The band will perform music from the "Big Band Era" to modern day settings of our true American art form. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to bring their camp chairs, blankets, and even some picnic goodies for dinner as we celebrate Jazz together by the river. 4th of July - All-American Gourmet Breakfast by the Durango Rotary Clubs

Brought to you by the Rotary Club of Durango and the Daybreak Rotary Club. Scrambled eggs, green chili eggs, sausage, pancakes, fruit topping, biscuits and gravy will be served. Tickets may be purchased online or by using the QR code on posters around town, or from a local Rotary Member. Adult ticket price is $15 presale or $20 after July 1. Children 6-12 $8 presale or $10 after July 1. First Responders are $10. Children under 6 are free.   Part of the 4th of July Celebration!
4th of July - Freedom 5K by Durango by City of Durango Parks and Recreation
9:00am / Rotary Park
Join the City of Durango’s Parks and Recreation Department and start your 4th of July festivities on the right foot. Bring your whole family and all your friends to participate, and dress to celebrate Independence Day! All ages are welcome to run, walk, stroll or stride this festive 5K along the scenic Animas River Trail. The race begins at 9:00 am at Rotary Park. Participants are encouraged to dress in creative and patriotic attire. Prizes will be distributed for first place in 3 categories: 12 & under, 13-18, and over 18 years of age. Participants must check in at the Freedom 5K race tent between 8:15 am and 8:45 am. This event is free.   Part of the 4th of July Celebration!

4th of July Picnic Benefitting Building Homes for Heroes
12:00pm / Buckley Park
A fun-filled afternoon in Buckley Park in downtown Durango. There will be a barbecue with Hotdogs, Burgers, soft drinks and Beer. Two bands. Vinyl Lust from 12:00 to 2:00 pm and then it will be Kirk James from 2:30 to 4:30. There is no admission and all are welcome. All the proceeds will go to Building Homes for Heroes, a 501 c3 that gifts mortgage-free homes to severely injured veterans and first responders. It is a great way to celebrate the 4th.   Please: No Smoking; No Firearms: No Dogs; No Soliciting   Part of the 4th of July Celebration!
4th of July - Stars & Stripes Parade
5:00pm / Main Avenue in Downtown Durango
Line up early on Main Avenue for the annual 4th of July Parade. The theme this year is Play It Like A Local! Summer in Durango is all about us locals doing what we love: hiking, biking, rafting, concerts, festivals, campouts, and more. Expect some imaginative floats as well as bands, singers, cyclists, horses, fire engines and more. The Parade starts at College (6th Street) and Main Avenue at 5:00 pm and ends at 12th Street and Buckley Park. Bring a small American flag to waive and stand at attention when the VFW Color Guard passes by. Judges and announcers will be on the 800 block of Main by the Main Mall. This event is free to spectate. $5 entry fee for parade floats.    Part of the 4th of July Celebration!
4th of July - Street Dance featuring The Motet and Desert Child
6:00pm / Transit Center
After the parade, head straight for the Transit Center to celebrate into the night. The City of Durango and KSUT Presents bring you food, beer, dancing and two awesome bands. At 6:00 pm, Desert Child returns to start the party and get you on your feet and dancing. At 7:30 pm The Motet will take the stage to rev up the night. Arrive to eat and dance, stay for the fireworks! This event is free. Participants may buy their dinner and drinks from one of the many great vendors. The food court includes Ska Brewing, Crazy Coop Chicken, Chef Safari, Tacos La Carranzo, The Ice Cream Lady and more. The activities area features corn hole, face painting, henna tattoos, and Ruby Balloon. Bring a lawn chair!   Part of the 4th of July Celebration!

Oscar's Café Pie Eating Contest
1:30pm / Durango Beer and Ice Company
If you've eaten at Oscar's Café here in Durango, then you've seen the HUGE pies behind the counter. (And if you haven't eaten there, you should.) Oscar's Café is supplying the pies, and Durango Beer & Ice is supplying the venue for a pie-eating contest at 1:30 pm on Friday, July 5. For spectators we suggest a nice lunch and a beer at Durango Beer & Ice before watching the shenanigans. Contestants - we suggest you save room for the pie! Twelve apple pies, twelve contestants. Every contestant gets some goodies, and there will be a nice prize for the winner. Competitors must be 15 years or older. Competitors under 18 need a parent or guardian's consent. Four Days for the Fourth - Watermelon Eating Contest

Do you LOVE watermelon? Show us how much at the 11th Street Station Watermelon Eating Contest on Friday July 5 from 4 to 6 pm at 1101 Main Ave. This is a tournament-style contest with three age groups - 6 and under, 7 to 15, and 16 and older. A max of 8 entrants will be accepted for the 6 and under category, and a max of 16 for the 7 to 15 and 16+ groups. The winners of each match will be determined by weighing how much watermelon remains. Prizes for 1st and 2nd place. Last year's winner in the 16+ category ate 9.5 lbs!!! Four Days For The Fourth - July is for Pie! Baking Contest

EsoTerra Ciderworks is all about applies! Bakers in the Junior (under 18) and Senior (18 or over) categories will submit a fresh-baked apple pie to be judged by area chefs. Once the winners have been selected, EsoTerra will serve $3 "taste" plates. All proceeds go to preserving heritage apple trees. Come early to see the beautiful designs before the pies are cut. By using character skits, and flawless magic technique, Mysto (the Master Magician and his lovely Assistant Alyssa) bring their audiences back to a simpler time of joy, wonder, amazement, and just good ole-fashioned FUN. Watch the classic movie, Sandlot, on a 20' movie screen! Bring your blankets, chairs, family and friends to enjoy a night at the movies together at Buckley Park. Prior to the movie, enjoy live music by local singer songwriter Leah Orkowski, followed by a dynamic performance from the Durango Aerial Arts and Acrobatic Circus. The music begins at 7:00 pm. The Good Fight Boxing Gym presents a USA Boxing -sanctioned amateur showcase - the first of its kind in Durango! Approximately 20 bouts will be fought during the day, drawing USA Boxing athletes, coaches, and families from multiple states. New to boxing? Join us at the beautiful Main Mall where a full-size boxing ring is erected to showcase boxers of all ages and backgrounds. Stores will be open in the Main Mall for spectators and shoppers. Proceeds from the event will support The Good Fight Scholarship Fund. Contestants will be provided with an age-appropriate utensil and will cut in half food items from the 11th Street Station food trucks. The most even cut advances to the next round. Hot diggity dog! Join the Hot Dog Eating Contest at 11th Street Station, located at 1101 Main Ave., on Saturday July 6 starting at 5 pm. Three age groups - 6 and under, 7 to 15, and 16 and older - with a max of 10 contestants per age group. Whoever eats the most hot dogs and buns in the time limit wins! Time limits are: 6 and under, 2 minutes; 7 to 15, 3 minutes; and 16 and older 4 minutes. Prizes for 1st and 2nd place. Musician Richard Nihil is an artis, a photographer, a poet, a traveler, and an Army Veteran. Although he spends most of his time in Arizona, he travels extensively, playing music. His catalog includes over 1500 songs, featuring music from the 1020's to the 2020's. He has an impressive range, with music from Big Band, Country, Classic Rock, Delta Blues, Punk, Irish Traditional, Grunge, Hip Hop, Metal, Folk, and New Wave. This event is free.
