In the spirit of Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, and George Washington, our community will celebrate our nation’s independence July 1 – July 7 in a unique manner with the declaration of “Independents Week.” Celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurism and community, Local First - a non-profit organization serving local, independent businesses in La Plata County - will lead the charge for being part of this nationwide movement to recognize the importance of economic democracy and community self-determination.

Throughout the week, Local First will advocate for member businesses and organizations through print advertising, e-promotions, broadcast media, Be Local Shopping Passports, a Declaration of Independence and Interdependence with the City of Durango, and sidewalk decals at participating local, independent businesses. Local First will be asking consumers to support local and independent businesses of all kinds - from community banks to service industries, artists, local energy, restaurants, and non-profits.
