Nature Center Workshop: The Natural and Human History of the La Plata Mountains
Sat, July 22, 2017
10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Often overshadowed by taller sub-ranges within the San Juans, the La Plata Mountains have a unique story to tell through their magma-hardened rock layers and mining remnants. Located roughly between Durango, Dolores, and Rico, the mountains were formed millions of years ago as molten rock rose to the surface and made its way through pre-existing sedimentary rock. This geologic history can be seen prominently in the banded peaks of Centennial and Hesperus Mountain. You have seen their silver peaks from Durango, now come and learn what makes this range so special. All ages are welcome.
