DESCRIPTION
The Open House honors Durango Resident and Master Gardener Marye Jackson on her 90th Birthday. This family-friendly event (sorry, no dogs in the garden) features scheduled activities beginning at 9:00 AM with a tour of OKCG’s 45 organic garden plots, Permaculture berm with food forest, insectary, herb gardens, and composting area. The tour takes to the neighborhood streets with OKCG gardener and local historian Bruce Spining, who will share interesting facts about historic Animas City where the garden is located. An afternoon tour takes place at 1:30 PM. :: Enjoy music from 10:30 – 11:30 AM, provided by Vivace Mandolin Ensemble playing early 1900s Italian dance music. :: A pie-tasting contest takes place from 11:30 – 1:00 PM, with visitors tasting and judging both sweet and savory pie entries. A $5 donation is requested to taste and judge the pies. Pie entries must be submitted at 10:00 AM to OKCG Pavillion. The winning pie will be announced at 1:00 PM. Winning pie makers receive garden plots during the 2019 season. Pie entry questions, email okcommunitygarden@gmail.com. :: From 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, the OKCG Farm Stand will sell fresh picked produce. All sales will benefit OKCG. :: At high noon, join OKCG gardeners, friends and family of master gardener Marye Jackson in a toast to celebrate her 90th birthday taking place that day. A charter member of OKCG, Jackson managed Shared Harvest Community Garden for 7 of the 16 years she was a member. She is a former Durango Botanical Society board member and was named 2017 Volunteer of the Year by the The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado. Opened in 2013 as a project of The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado, Ohana Kuleana Community Garden envisions healthy, abundant living by promoting organic growing to enhance a supportive community and sustainability for everyone. Located at 564 E 30th Street, just below Riverview Elementary School, the school utilizes the garden as a teaching lab for its students. Ohana Kuleana are Hawaiian terms that mean ‘Community Responsibility: we all own each other’s actions.’
