DESCRIPTION
Join us for lunch with presenter John Whitney, US Senator Michael Bennett’s Western Slope Regional Director. This is the second part of our two-part series on Public Lands. John Whitney’s work focuses on the natural resources issues that affect the Western Slope including public lands, energy, wildlife and water issues. He also focuses on other issues for the Senator including health care, economic development, broadband, tax policy, and other local community priorities Most recently, John led Senator Bennet’s state efforts on the CORE Act, legislation that would designate around 400,000 acres of public land with a variety of protective designations. These designations include wilderness areas, National Recreation Areas, bans on federal oil and gas development in pristine areas, and a first of its kind National Historic Landscape designation for Camp Hale. Camp Hale was the training site for the legendary 10th Mountain Division which fought in Italy during World War II. The bill is carried by Congressman Joe Neguse in the House of Representatives and passed that chamber in October. If passed into law, the CORE Act would be the largest bill to protect public lands in Colorado since the 1993 Colorado Wilderness Act.
