DESCRIPTION
"True West" follows two brothers with turbulent childhoods as they butt heads over a film script. This play is Shepard's signature piece for it's fascinating ability to balance comedy and suspense. As with many of Shepard's plays, these are not characters with any moral high ground to stand on, but they highlight a truth about human nature we cannot escape.

This production stars two of Durango's favorites: Jeff Graves as Lee, a demented petty thief, and Geoff Johnson as Austin, a well-educated, but struggling screenwriter. These two Durangoans and best friends have acted together since their days in the Durango High School theater and their connection on stage is undeniable. Together, they push and pull each other in oddly comedic ways that build up steam and tension leaving the audience sitting in a pressure cooker wondering "who will explode first?"

Directors Mandy Gardner and Wendy Ludgewait are keenly aware of how each beat and tactic builds the pressure on stage. Their brilliant direction has shaped the story to highlight one of Sam Shepard's most quintessential writing talents: to make you think you're watching one thing while presenting another.
