DESCRIPTION
The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society invites the public to a presentation in the Lyceum at the Center of Southwest Studies and on Zoom on Wednesday, September 11th at 7:00 pm. At 6:30 we will have social time. Then after a brief business meeting, we will have a presentation by Venancio Aragon, Diné textile artist and former NPS interpreter. Mr. Aragon's talk is titled "The Survival of Diné textile traditions.". For log-in information go to SJBAS.ORG.

Venancio Aragon is a citizen of the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. Aragon first began learning his art from his mother at the age of ten. Having degrees in cultural anthropology and Native American and Indigenous studies, Aragon has found methods of fusing his education and culture into his art by researching ancient textiles and techniques, spinning and dyeing fiber and weaving tapestries. Aragon views Navajo weaving as a way to preserve his cultural identity by promoting the continuation and practice of his ancestor's legacy. He earned a B.A. in Native American and Indigenous Studies, Fort Lewis College, Colorado, 2010 and a B.A. Anthropology, University of New Mexico, 2009. In 2020, he received the Rollin and Mary Ella King Native Artist Fellow, School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
