DESCRIPTION
The public is invited to a presentation in the Lyceum at the Center of Southwest Studies and on Zoom. At 6:30 we will have social time. Then after a brief business meeting, we will have a presentation by Leigh Marymor, Research Associate, Museum of Northern Arizona. Mr. Marymor’s subject is “Western Message Petroglyphs: Faux Native American Picture-Writing in Colorado and the American West”. For log-in information go to SJBAS.ORG.<Br><Br> Western Message Petroglyphs are engraved with metal-edged tools on boulders and natural rock walls. They are found in remote settings along transportation routes associated with mining town such as Durango, Del Norte. The author or authors appropriated Native American and world-wide cultural symbols arranged in straight line to be read left to right. Mr. Marymor says “Whoever did the engraving read Smithsonian ethnological reports from the late 19th century.”<Br><Br> Leigh is a Research Affiliate at the Museum of Northern Arizona. He holds a B.S. degree in Community Education, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, he is a trained textile artist and retired in 2021 as President of The Lunt Marymor Company, a construction firm located in the San Francisco Bay Area specializing in plumbing, radiant heating, and fire sprinkler design and installations. He is a Past President of the American Rock Art Research Association where he has been a member for 40 years and also served several terms during that time as Chairperson of the ARARA’s Conservation Committee.
