Prong Setting

DESCRIPTION
In this 3 1/2 to hour class you will learn how to make a soldered prong setting. This technique works well for irregular shaped objects such as ammonites and other fossils, sharks teeth, druzy quartz, enamel art and found objects like beach glass and broken pottery.

Skills will include sawing, soldering, shaping and filing metal.

To reduce tuition costs, we will work with copper backplates and sterling prongs. You may purchase sterling silver for a backplate from the instructor, if you wish, based on market price, shipping and tax, which is currently $7.95 per square inch.

Druzy quartz, beach glass, fossils and old coins will be provided, but feel free to bring a treasure from home. The ideal object for a sterling prong setting is between dime and silver dollar in diameter, and not more than 1/4' thick. All metals are included.

This is a beginner soldering class. No prior metalsmith or torch experience is required.

To register for this class, email the instructor Jama Crawford at jama.e.crawford@gmail.com. The fee is $125, payable when you arrive at class by cash, check or Venmo.
