St. Mark’s Church Historian Kip Boyd talks about William Kirkpatrick, the “Fish Prince” of Durango.
Arriving in Durango after the Civil War, William T. Kirkpatrick became a prominent businessman, rancher and conservationist. In the late 1880s, he restocked trout in San Juan Mountains streams that had been decimated by “dynamite fishing.” Kirkpatrick may also have given Durango’s St. Mark’s Episcopal Church its first bell in 1906, but that is a tale shrouded in mystery. Come listen to the story of this remarkable man.
Now retired, Kip Boyd, MD has been a long time family practice physician and chief medical officer at Mercy. He is the historian for St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. In this role, he digs deep to learn about many of Durango’s founding and early residents who were members of the church. Often, these residents were interesting and/or prominent characters in Durango’s history.
